Navigation comes down to knowing where you are, which way to point, and when you will arrive. This group covers the basic time, speed and distance relationship, great-circle distances between coordinates, the three heading references and the conversions between them, corrections when a leg drifts off track, and the two classic decision points: the equal time point and the point of no return.
- Time, speed and distance Solve whichever of the three you are missing from the other two.
- Great-circle distance and bearing Distance and initial bearing between two latitude and longitude positions.
- True, magnetic and compass heading Convert between the three heading references without losing a sign.
- Off-course correction Drifted off track? Work out the heading change that puts you back on it.
- Flight leg ETA in UTC Departure time plus flight time, with the date rollover handled properly.
- Equal time point The point where turning back and pressing on take the same time.
- Point of no return The furthest point you can reach and still have the fuel to come home.
- VOR time and distance to station Estimate range to a VOR by timing how fast the bearing changes.
